Toastmasters is an organization of clubs around the world and in Connecticut. Rotary and Toastmasters have agreed to work together. Toastmasters has a club near you. The idea is for Toastmaster Clubs and Rotary clubs near each other to work together.

So go to their meeting, invite them to your meeting, Let them speak, that's what they want to do. Work together. Maybe they want to help with a service project

ENGLEWOOD, Colo., Jan. 7, 2020 — Members of Toastmasters and Rotary will enhance their skills, broaden their networks and increase their positive impact in communities through a new collaboration.

The ongoing relationship between the two organizations will begin at the grassroots level with local club members learning and working together. Additionally, Toastmasters will create a set of eight structured communication and leadership development courses for Rotary with a phased rollout that will be available in English in 2020, and in more languages in 2021.

Mental Health First Aid USA is an 8-hour training to teach participants how to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. The evidence behind the program demonstrates that it helps trainees identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders.

Mental Health is very important in all our towns. One problem with bad mental health is suicide.

Some organizations can provide mental health first aid.
Your Rotary Club can organize a Mental Health First Aid course in your area. Do it and you will be recognized in your community and bring lots of value.

Mental Health First Aid USA is an 8-hour training to teach participants how to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. The evidence behind the program demonstrates that it helps trainees identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders.

Like CPR, Mental Health First Aid prepares participants to interact with a person in crisis and connect the person with help. First Aiders do not take on the role of professionals — they do not diagnose or provide any counseling or therapy. Instead, the program offers concrete tools and answers key questions, like “what do I do?” and “where can someone find help?”

Mental Health First Aid uses role-playing and simulations to demonstrate how to offer initial help in a mental health crisis and connect persons to the appropriate professional, peer, social, and self-help care. The program also teaches the common risk factors and warning signs of specific types of illnesses, like anxiety, depression, substance use, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, and schizophrenia. Mental Health First Aid teaches participants a five-step action plan, ALGEE, to support someone developing signs and symptoms of a mental illness or in an emotional crisis:

• Assess for risk of suicide or harm
• Listen nonjudgmentally
• Give reassurance and information
• Encourage appropriate professional help
• Encourage self-help and other support strategies

Certified Mental Health First Aid instructors provide a list of community healthcare providers and national resources, support groups, and online tools for mental health and addictions treatment and support. All trainees receive a program manual to compliment the course material.

Serving the Served: A RYLA Challenge Project

As part of the RYLA Conference in October, high-school students formed groups and were challenged to create a service project that would make a difference in the community. One group, who named their project Serving the Served, wanted to give back to the veterans in their community. The group consists of Nicole McKinney-West Haven, Nicholas Ribeiro - Notre Dame, Miranda D'Angelo - West Haven, Ryan Caine - Hopkins, Lourdes Bumgardner, and Ethan Evans.  Their idea was to help homeless veterans by providing them with basic necessities (food, clothing, hygiene, etc.) through a bi-annual collection. This project would be no small feat, and with the holidays approaching, they wanted to make a more immediate impact. Funded by local Rotary clubs, the Serving the Served group assembled 130 holiday gift bags full of playing cards, puzzle books, novels, sweets, and homemade holiday cards. On December 15th, the group delivered the gift bags to the very appreciative patients at the VA Hospital in West Haven. They hope to continue this as a yearly tradition, and we look forward to seeing all that this group will do in the future. Puerto Rico Earthquake- One Way to Donate

Puerto Rico has a crisis because of a series of earthquakes. 

Below is a note describing a way to help.

I am reaching out to you with the hope that you will forward the information below (and attached) to your District Governor and that the District Governor will in turn share with the District Presidents.

Puerto Rico is in crisis.  We received this from Rotary District 7000 Governor Marilyn Lopez; 

 "...Some people have died, mostly from heart attacks. As residents of the affected area we can attest to the deep sense of fear and desperation when experiencing such catastrophic events....Affected people in towns near to the earthquake’s epicenters have abandoned homes and multiple tent camps have been established, albeit, some without tents!  cots, food, water is scarce., etc... " 

Through the Rotary network that has been established for other disaster relief efforts there is a path to directly help the people of Puerto Rico. At this time, monetary donations are the most direct and effective way to provide the assistance they need. Please read the information below and forward to anyone you think will help. Puerto Rico Disaster Relief

On January 7 there was an earthquake, magnitude 6.4 followed by another 6.0 tremor, which impacted the southwest coast of Puerto Rico. As a result, a number of houses collapsed and buildings and other structures have been structurally compromised. Many people are afraid to sleep inside out of fear of another quake or aftershock.

After Hurricane Maria, the Liberty, NY Rotary Club developed a network of Rotarians from Puerto Rico, Massachusetts and New York to provide assistance to the Moca, Puerto Rico, area which was devastated by the hurricane, and together we are working with the leaders of Rotary Clubs in Puerto Rico’s district 7000 to respond to this latest crisis.

We received this message from Puerto Rico’s Rotary District Governor;

I will not attempt here to provide here more details that can best be reported by the news.

Response has been slow.... It is starting to flow from the local government. Private citizens have supported others in need as best as possible.

Response from the Federal Government, FEMA is slow. Waiting for President Trump to declare Puerto Rico a disaster area. Don't know the details but you all know the whole Puerto Rico disaster relief aid since Hurricane Maria leaves a lot to be desired…”

The Puerto Rico Rotary leadership has stated that, while they know that their US and International friends will probably reach out and provide immediate supplies, monetary donations would be most effective.  Receiving funds will allow them to be more proactive and purchase needed supplies at home, which will save time and expense in purchasing and shipping supplies from the U.S. and will help them stimulate their economy.

Rotary International Conventions are wonderful events. We have been to Atlanta, to Toronto and to Hamburg in recent years. Each one was special and I've met lots of people, learned a lot and participated in history.

Hawaii is a special place with great beaches, interesting wildlife and surprising history. A great place for a vacation.
