International Assembly- Notes and Comments

International Assembly 2019
Notes and Comments

Plan for a Large Event-This relates to a large polio fundraising event at the Coliseum in Rome called the Gadiators. They got a very famous speaker-Russell Crowe.
  1. Start from your dream
  2. Decide the message you want to send
  3. Whom do you want to address
  4. Create a Team
  5. Fix the Date
  6. Choose the venue
  7. Invite a prominent speaker
  8. Make a budget
  9. Define a roadmap
  10. Have a plan B
  11. Define a bold communication and marketing plan
Gladiator event to raise money for polio

It also applies to District 7980's concert to raise money for polio last year.

Membership/Clubs
Every Rotary Club should have a  Rotaract club partner. And vice versa
Barry Rassin

Mark Malone's plan
Innovation in existing clubs
Creation of new Innovative Clubs
Rotaractors

Jeff Cadorette
You cannot grow Rotary by adding a few to each club
Rotary needs to add new clubs with new, diverse people

Polio Effort and Implications for Underserved communities health
Henrietta Forte of UNICEF gave an inspiring speech on polio and the history of the battle. She also talked about the importance of Rotary in community health care. The use of Rotary's system for bringing polio vaccine to underserved communities can also be used to reach hard to reach people for other diseases.

Elimination of cerivical cancer in Sri Lanka
Two Rotary clubs 14,000 miles apart working on the early detection of cancer. Rotary Club of Birmingham and one in Sri Lanka. RI President KR Ravindran tells the story.
Essentially eliminated cervical cancer in Sri Lanka. A doctor at Birmingham was an essential part of the collaboration.

Eliminate Silos in Rotary Training
Train the District and Zone -Public Image, Foundation and Membership teams together. These areas overlap and creating silos is a bad idea.

President Elect Mark Malone's plan
1. Grow Rotary
      Create new membership models
      New paths to Rotary membership
Create new Rotary and Rotaract clubs
Barry Rassin comment-Every Rotary Club should have an associated Rotaract Club
Rotaractors and others commented that University Rotaract clubs are problematic, that Community based ones are sustainable.
2. Involve our families
3. Build a viable path to Rotary leadership
Perhaps the DG does not have to visit every club
Some Districts in Asia have over 100 clubs and 4000 members
4. United Nations partnerships

Emphasis on Each Governor and Each President helping those who come before and Follow after
Several speakers emphasized this and it came up in the discussion groups. Our Governor Track meetings are important and not practiced by all Districts.

Rotary International Assembly 2

The International Assembly has several elements. There's the plenary sessions where everyone hears great speakers and sees inspiring videos. There's the breakout groups where District Governor Elects talk to each other about Rotary, plans and ideas. Then there's the celebrations International Exchange, Festival Night. And we all had our picture taken with Rotary International President Elect Mark Malone.

Community Art-A Fundraiser

Scott McLaughlin, District Governor 2019-20 in Nebraska told me about Community Art.

This fundraiser can raise quite a bit of money for our wonderful causes while establishing contacts with the Community.  The cost for the blanks is paid for by the corporate and personal sponsorships. The painted objects are auctioned off for thousands of dollars each. The painter receives some of that money. This has been done in New England, Maryland and other places.

The Community(Rotary Club) buys plain white models of whatever is chosen. Kearney, Nebraska chose Cranes. They buy around 30 or so. Local businesses, individuals and non-profits sponsor these models and have the first right to buy them once they are painted. These sponsorships pay for the initial cost of the models.

You find an equal number of local artists who agree to make art out of the models. The artist gets a fraction of the sales price of the art. The models are distributed throughout the town, many are at the sponsors place of business.

One of the Cranes after the artist finished

And here's another, 30 or so in all
After the artists are finished and they have been showed a suitable time at their locations all around town, the finished models are brought together for an auction.  A book is produced with all the crane artwork and this can also be sold. People buy the finished artwork. The original sponsor can match any bids on his model.

Bulletin From District 7980 Governor Larry Gardner

District governor bulletin January 2019

A Message from District Governor Larry Gardner
Happy New Year to all District 7980 Rotarians.
We have reached the halfway point of our Rotary Year and our accomplishments are many. As we navigate into the New Year, let us reflect back on the work we have accomplished to save lives and make a difference in our communities and around the world. You are all to be applauded for the great work we have achieved, but there is much to do in front of us.
Now is the time to embrace our personal networks, tell them "our Rotary story" and connect them to our work, both inside our clubs and inside our community. In January, we will embark on the next phase of a multiyear District Communications program that will educate and align the entire District around "best practices" in communicating our great work to the masses. We must all work diligently to remove the "Rotary is the best kept secret in our community" stigma that surrounds many of our Clubs. Please make sure you work with your AG and particpate fully in the upcoming District Communication Tour program that is coming to your Area between February and April.
January also kicks-off our 2019 Rotary Annual 4-Way Test Speech Contest activities. This is a chance to connect the youth of our communities to the values that we embrace through our 4-Way Test. Do not miss this opportunity to engage with your school's and introduce them to this extremely powerful opportunity.
PE's the necessary tools to run vibrant club meetings for the upcoming 2019-2020 Rotary year. The following items will be covered for this Training program: Leadership, Club management, Club Board Management, Finances, Global and District managed grants, Membership, Club Calendar, and Communications.
